Best way to Deep Clean / Strip Glass?
« on: February 12, 2023, 06:08:38 PM »
What's the best way to clean or strip glass?  Especially windshields.   So far I've tried rubbing alcohol, white vinegar, and window cleaner using shop towels (paper) and they still seem to have a "oily" or streaky look.  I've seen steel wool and buffers suggested but I'm not sure about that.

The rubbing alcohol might be too weak to remove oily residue.  First, try a solvent based cleaner like Wax & Grease Remover typically used in body prep, available at your local auto paint store.  Use a paper towel to wipe it on and off.  It won't hurt paint and will come in handy for other uses on the car.  It will remove wax if it gets on paint.  Also, a clay bar with Dawn dish soap and water in a spray bottle as a lubricant.  This will remove little bumps and other debris and the Dawn is also a good degreaser.  Then follow up with a good glass cleaner like "Perfect Glass" available at Lowes.

The Automshow detainers use #0000 steel wool.   Wet it with windex.

Like this  aerosol glass. Leaner, all the detailers use it.  It bad the ping, it’s in a metal van, yiu can drop it on your car
They now make a plastic bottle !!!!!!!!!
Eastwood does make a glass polish kit, I imagine it would be messy, it won’t take out deep scratches, but it does a nice job a few people said, rule, if you can feel it with a fingernail, it won’t remove it.

Thanks for all the suggestions.   The steel wool made the biggest difference I think.  And no laughing at the shaving cream, I've used that on mirrors for years.

I like sprayaway glass cleaner.   It’s what the detailers use at the auto shows.
