Help with vapour canister
« on: March 25, 2016, 08:10:55 PM »
Hi everyone,

I have been looking high and low for a replacement vapour canister for my N/A 301 Formula. The correct canister is shown below. Every replacement one I can find says 5.0 Ltr only '71-82 and not compatible with 4.9 Ltr (different attachments on top). Any ideas ?

Thanks

Cory

Is that the 301 version in pic? I recognise the part number so it's ptobavly what was common to many in late 70's, not turbo. Or is it just a sample pic?

I have a 78 with a 403 and the canister / part number you have pictured is the correct one for my car.  If it has too many ports, you should be able to cap the extra ones and the canister would work.

Thanks - did not think about caping the extra ports - good idea

Yes that is the 301 version. The other versions have two few or too many ports

The canister for the Grand National is a service replacement, it does have an extra port, and it comes with a plug.  I used one on my 78.   It has charcoal wadding in it instead of pellets, I tossed the nOS one in a tub for that reason.  If you get one with pellets, I would put a filter on the purge line.

That's my pic, lmao.   That's for the 400, I didn't know the 301 was the same.

The canister I had didnt come with a cap.  I bought a pack of them at Autozone for a couple dollars.

I would recommend getting a spare part  if you have a canister on your car, they are getting harder to find all the time.

The charcoal canister is a breathing tank, I wouldn't plug any ports

you have to identify the purpose of each port.  You can't just plug one.

The canister should have verbiage on it telling you what each port is.  I looked at my original one and plugged the ports that were not included on the original canister.

If you plug the wrong one you'll build up dangerous pressure.  Then you'll have to drill a hole in it.

Mine came with a plug for one port, the Buick had another port.
