Any audio equipment hobbyists?
« on: September 08, 2022, 01:08:11 AM »
In the past couple years I’ve taken up collecting and enjoying defunct digital audio formats of the 80’s & 90’s.

I have a pair of Tascam Digital Audio Tape decks
And I also have several MiniDisc decks

Anyone else into this stuff?

I’d hardly call myself a hobbyist per se but I do have a cheap late 80s Fisher setup with a turntable, tape deck and tuner along with a 1972 Sony 8 track deck. Think I have like 6 8 track tapes, a few cassettes and 40 or so records. If that counts lol

I worked for Circuit City in college and went into their management school right out of college.

Have some pieces still from my days there.  DCM speakers, Harmon Kardon stuff and some Onkyo Integra stuff.

Have a Yamaha at my shop with Onkyo CD player and Techniques speakers.  Love the old stuff.

I'm not a hobbyist but a few months ago I was given a vintage system. Tape deck didn't work but everything else did so I took the turn table and amplifier and hooked them up through my existing amplifier and now I have a turn table. Kinda cool to have but not sure it will get much use.

I had a new in the box RCA AM/FM 8-Track for my car, but never installed it.  I instead went with a Kenwood AM/FM CD player.  I just couldn't get the pads on the tapes right when I was trying to restore the 8-track tapes.  Would've been fun but all the tapes that I recorded played too fast.

I regret not getting into MiniDisc until after they were discontinued.  I heard that equipment and blank discs were sold for super cheap.  Sony is apparently making small runs of blank MiniDiscs only in Japan where they're still popular.  Going to Best Buy now isn't the same since Circuit City closed their retail stores.  We bought our 1st HDTV from there, a 50" Sony Bravia LCD, I think 2007.  It still works and still looks amazing.

I'm curious, what kind of tape deck?  Is it worth fixing?  Usually the rubber belts turn back into oil, and depending on it's age (especially reel-to-reel) the rubber pinch rollers start to do the same thing only they get brittle and break apart.  Might be worth looking into fixing it depending on if you have tapes.
