Schwinn orange Krate Bike
« on: December 30, 2014, 12:51:18 AM »
Just bought me a birthday present a 1973 Orange Krate. It has the extremely rare rear disk brake option and is museum quality restored.
The guy I bought it from said I was crazy for spending the thousands that I did to ride it at car shows and cruise ins and not display it.
But I wanted a perfect bike that I would not look at and wan't to fix this or that on. Every time I ride it it takes me back to the 70's.
I found a Original NOS in the box headlight/tailight/generator kit on ebay and can't wait to put it on. Any body else have bikes???

Very cool. I always wanted one of those when I was a kid. Too expensive then and now.

I always wanted one, you see them at the swaps up here, I posted some pics of all of the crate bikes before, last year at Auto Rama a guy had one of each.  I'll look for the pics.  I've never knew they had rear disc brakes.  When I was a kid a friend had a Apple crate and another bud had a Cotton Picker.

Yes they called them Ramshorn bars. My buddy has a Krate with Ramshorn bars and an orange Krate like mine.

Yeah rear disc brakes were special order. If you zoom in on the pictures you can see the set up. I don't think many dealers stocked more than just the basic krate bike.

I had a friend that racked his nuts 6 ways from Tuesday on the shifter while playing Evel Knievel (old Buick hood ramped on a pile of sand). Had to get the little buggers shoved back in and the sack sewed up w/ like 20 stiches in the ER.  Scarred me for life, seeing that wreck.

Look closely that's a little pocket size model of a Krate.
